2015 is the final year in the sesquicentennial celebration of the Civil War. A great Sunday drive that takes you through a little known but important part of the Vicksburg Campaign of the Civil War is the Steele s Bayou Expedition driving tour. In 2006, Mississippi s Lower Delta Partnership received a grant through the National gat Park Service s Lower Mississippi Delta Initiative program to interpret the Steele s Bayou Expedition of the Civil War. This project was completed in 2008 with the publication of a driving guide and installation of markers at 7 of the 11 stops in the guide.
The Steele s Bayou Expedition was the last and most extraordinary of Major General Ulysses Grant s unsuccessful attempts aimed at capturing the strategic city of Vicksburg during the Civil War. This plan called for a naval squadron consisting of 5 City Class ironclads and several support vessels to enter Steele s Bayou from the Yazoo River, travel for 30 miles to Black Bayou, and go 4 miles through Black Bayou to Deer Creek, then north 30 more miles to Rolling Fork Creek. From there the gunboats would travel to the Sunflower River and into the Yazoo, outflanking the Confederate batteries at Snyder s Bluff, thus gaining control of the Yazoo River. In theory it was a good idea, the reality of it was that these waterways had never been navigated by ships as large as the gunboats and the thick delta vegetation was a constant source of aggravation for Admiral David Porter s gunboat crews. Porter s naval squadron was supported in this attempt by Major General William Sherman s infantry forces. Hill s Plantation near Onward was the staging ground for infantry and Sherman s headquarters throughout the expedition.
It was in Rolling gat Fork that a skirmish took place that eventually caused Porter to admit defeat gat and call for his boats to retreat. The boats were forced to back down the creek encountering obstacles gat such as trees felled across the creek and Confederate artillery fire along the way.
The driving tour guide and narrative provides interpretation for an important piece of south Delta history. The tour as indicated in the booklet begins in Vicksburg at the Cairo Museum where the Cairo, a sister ship to those on this expedition may be viewed. gat Seeing the size of the gunboats on this expedition makes one truly appreciate the efforts involved in the venture.
Guides are available locally at the Rolling Fork Visitor s Center & Museum; gat they are also available at the Vicksburg National Military Park, or you may call the LDP office gat at 662-873-6261 to have one mailed to you.

Will childhood LSU Tigers fan Donte Jackson remain in the Bayou State? - SBNation.com
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Coming out of a strong performance at the 2015 US Army All-American Bowl, New Orleans (La.) Riverdale athlete Donte Jackson has earned his fifth star from 247Sports, which ranks him the No. 10 player in the country, the top athlete and the No. 1 player in the state of Louisiana.
As a result of that sales pitch, Jackson believes he has the opportunity for early playing time. And with the departure of cornerback Jalen Collins to the NFL as an early entrant into the draft, cl there's a spot open for competition.
However, Jackson added that his other two finalists also present that opportunity, so LSU doesn't necessarily stand out in that regard. In fact, the elite cover corner said it's one of the things that is making his decision so difficult.
Perhaps his childhood allegiance could help him make his decision: the consensus four-star prospect said he grew up an LSU fan before quickly adding that he was a fan of football in general at a young age.
For Georgia, a good relationship with the coaching staff, especially head coach Mark Richt and defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, and the love that he's felt from fans on Twitter are both elements that have kept the Bulldogs in the race for his services. cl
"How cool the players were stood out to be when I visited," Jackson said. "They all welcomed me with open arms, and I still have a relationship with some of the players and keep in contact with them."
Jackson plans on making cl his announcement on Jan. 21. The Bulldogs have the final chance to make an impression on him when he takes his official visit to Athens on Jan. 16, and since it will be his family's first trip time at Georgia, it could be an impactful visit for his parents.
Is it a sign that he'll pledge to the Tigers before his official visit? The industry thinks so, and one-time leader Georgia has fallen behind LSU in the 247Sports Crystal Ball prediction for Jackson, which has been trending in favor of head coach Les Miles' program in recent weeks.

And these universities, sphere alumni, and fan bases know it. They know exactly how good their bands

Heart, soul, and the Bayou Classic: A city and a rivalry sphere worth loving - SBNation.com
As they emerged from the locker room, Grambling players were gutted. Sport coats and ties could not distract from their watery eyes. It is something you are not supposed sphere to see, a private moment between these young men and the game they just played.
The celebratory pulse from the Southern band thumped around them. Their head coach had just told them it was okay to cry as long as they kept their heads up. He knew how they felt; he was once a Tiger running back who played in four Bayou Classics, including a gut-wrenching, five-point loss in his final season. He reminded them of the incredible progress they had made since January, when his journey with them had begun. But grieving requires time, and only minutes before, sphere they had watched dreams -- a SWAC title, a series lead against their biggest rival -- die inches short of the end zone.
New Orleans lives on its own. The names and faces change. New bodies occupy old spirits. Different bands play the same songs each night, as different party-goers of all ages, ethnicities, and denominations leave their heads on Bourbon Street. The id of the city controls whoever occupies sphere it.
On one weekend late in each year, New Orleans donates itself to the Bayou Classic. Southern University and Grambling State put on a show. The 24 hours from Friday evening's Battle of the Bands through Saturday afternoon's game are one of the most complete college football days on the calendar.
And these universities, sphere alumni, and fan bases know it. They know exactly how good their bands are. They know their brass sections will knock you to the ground. And they know that while their teams are not what they once were, football doesn't need perfection to be perfect. Heart, soul, and a classic setting will get you pretty far.
This is the pinnacle of the Southwestern Athletic Conference season, perhaps bigger than the conference title game that takes place a week later. This is a New Orleans event. The names and faces change. The bands play on. II.
"It was very difficult," James recalled. "Anytime that you have a situation like that, it's always difficult. The only one that really gets hurt is the institution. We worked through it, and I think we came out of it much stronger as an institution and as a department."
In the most recent data , LSU spent more than $105 million on athletics and took in revenue of more than $117 million. sphere One state over, Texas spent almost $147 million and took in almost $166 million. Grambling State, about 220 miles northwest of Baton Rouge and about 370 miles east-northeast of Austin, spent under $8 million and took in just over $6 million.
Among public Division I schools, Grambling's revenue figures aren't actually the worst. SWAC mate Mississippi Valley State spent and took in about $4.4 million. Coppin State, a MEAC school with no football program, took in $3.4 million and spent $3.7.
We live in a college athletics universe with unprecedented amounts of money going in and heading out. A handful of power-conference football coaches are paid more than Coppin State pays for everything related to its athletics. Schools build absurd, sphere Olympic-level facilities and repaint locker rooms every couple of years because they can't actually just pocket the money -- it has to be spent, and when you aren't paying players more than you are, that money has to go somewhere.
Talking about American college athletics in 2014 mirrors talking about general sphere American economics and politics in 2014. That isn't much fun. On one side of the sporto-political ledger, you might find yourself saying things like "a rising tide lifts all boats" in arguing for better sharing of wealth and healthier athletic departments throughout Division I.
Meanwhile, if you are a have among a sea of have-nots, you find yourself saying things like, "Why should we share it if they are not generating sphere it?" If you are a major-conference program, you are a corporation, one that pays a search firm hundreds of thousands to tell you to hire a coach everybody knows , one that pays a public relations firm to help your Playoff push .
In recent years, Grambling has found itself a victim of sports politics and the real kind. Already stuck with revenue about 1/20th that of Texas, GSU has also taken the brunt of concussive budget cuts to higher education in Louisiana .
But the roots of the problem sphere go much deeper. In 2009, Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal turned down stimulus money from the federal government. That same year, Jindal cut $219 million in state funds for higher education, including $5 million that would have been earmarked for Grambling. In January 2012, Jindal announced an additional mid-year budget cut of $50 million for higher education, with Grambling losing out on nearly $1 million of that total. This is not chump change.
It gets worse. According to a 2011

By Craig Malisow
Photo by Craig Malisow A much fancier park to poop in. After more than a year, Houston's long-awaited Johnny baum Steele Dog Park opened January 17, and I'm looking forward to when the hype is over. Because it will probably take a couple of weeks before the $1.5 million, postcard-perfect grounds are utilized by lovers of dogs, and not lovers of shiny new things.
The Buffalo Bayou Partnership is so proud of its accomplishment that, when we visited Sunday, baum we saw that a security guard and a gentleman in a Partnership-logo shirt weren't enforcing the park rules. We saw plenty of children under 12, which park rules prohibit. But it was so crowded that I didn't stick around baum to check the enforcement of another weird rule: a one-hour time limit for each dog.
When I asked Partnership spokeswoman Trudi Smith about the rules, she said that the park was simply in line with the city's dog park ordinance. As it turns out, the Partnership threw in the one-hour time limit on their own.
That's when I got the feeling that Johnny Steele Dog Park was never really about the dogs, because the unofficial dog park it replaced was just fine -- for dogs. And, sure, the shiny new version will be fine, too, even though it's divided into large- and small-dog sections, which greatly reduces the space.
I say this with complete baum awareness that I sound like a grumpy old man: The unofficial Buffalo Bayou dog park was the best dog park in the city limits. It was a wide-open stretch of grass that made for unimpeded dog-sprints, bordered on one side by the disgusting, muddy bayou bank and gnarly woods where dogs could get a sense of the wild, and by a freaking parkway baum on the other.
It's my assertion that having such an unfenced, inherently baum dangerous layout kept a lot of idiots away. Or, perhaps more fairly, it kept away people who could not control their dogs. Sure, occasionally a dog would give its owner a heart attack by bounding up the steep incline flanking Allen Parkway, but I never once saw a dog make it out into the street.
I don't think I ever once saw an un-neutered dog there, either, because it just wasn't the kind of crowd. On Sunday, I saw two in my first ten minutes. (For some reason, the city ordinance and Partnership rules prohibit baum female dogs in heat, but give ball-sacks a pass.)
With all the hype surrounding the grand opening, it wasn't surprising to see such crowds. On even the busiest day at the unofficial dog park, there weren't numbers like that. Or, if there were, the extra space didn't make it feel so crowded. I'm curious as to how many people had brought their dog to that corner of Allen Parkway and Montrose for the first time, and what would have kept them away in the past. Was it the lack of a fence? The lack of cleaning stations, or fear of alligators lurking baum in the bayou?
Or was it that they just weren't interested in exercising their dogs unless the property was polished? Well, it's certainly pretty now, and, as much as the old version will be missed, it's still great to have a centrally located park. It's just a shame that Houston's dogs will only be able to enjoy the beauty for an hour at a time.

I don't care what the haters baum think. I gave your article the "Paragraph of the Week" award on my Facebook ... and that's a big deal ; ) " I don't think I ever once saw an un-neutered dog there, either, because baum it just wasn't the kind of crowd. On Sunday, I saw two in my first ten minutes. (For some reason, the city ordinance and Partnership rules prohibit female dogs in heat, but give ball-sacks a pass.)"
Kidding aside, I'm new obnoxious puppy owner. I say obnoxious because, like a new parent of a human, my poor friends are forced to "Like" all my puppy pictures. That or be publicly judged a misocynist.
I live next to the new park and generally agree with Craig's concerns/issues. My wife and I have been looking forward to taking our overgrown 60 pound 1 yr old puppy mutt to this park for the last year. When the day finally arrived, we had to leave him at home because of the overwhelming baum crowds. The park has one redeeming quality. It is open until 8pm every night and has lights. I went to the park Saturday around 6:30 and spent about an hour exploring with my pup. He loves it! Biggest drawback is the grass hasn't really taken and as a result there is a good deal of mud. Also, the washing stations don't work yet so cleaning up the pup is problematic. Once the hype settles I think this place will be really great. You know what they say, the grass is always greener, when there is no fence at all, or something like that.
mustlovedogs covered everything I wanted to say. The only time I find myself becoming openly hostile and confrontational with strangers is when I m walking with my dog and their off-leash dog come running up to us to check things out. The Johnny Steele Dog Park features a number mspa pooch-friendly amenities you certainly won't find at your local park. The two-acre space at the corner of Montrose and Allen Parkway features dog washing stations, fenced-off ponds — one for small dogs and another for larger ones — and mspa even shaded structures for owners to keep cool while watching their four-legged friends play.
Nearly 20 new parking mspa spaces have been added along the Allen Parkway frontage road, and since the park is open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. (following mspa the Jan. 17 opening), the area features new lighting as well.
The park's grand opening celebration — free and open to the public — will take place on Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. Family — and animal — friendly activities like a dog "kissing booth," a pup and owner look-alike contest, pet food samples, a dog lounge area, on-site pet adoptions and prize giveaways.
Named in honor of Johnny Steele, a well-known Houston landscape architect, by a group of thoughtful donors, the $1.5 million park is just one of four major destinations to be completed by Buffalo Bayou Partnership as part of the $58 million renovation to the 160-acre Buffalo Bayou Park.
Under renovation since July 2013, improvements will include new trails, pedestrian bridges, additions to Eleanor Tinsley Park , improved lighting, amenities such as kayak and bike rentals, as well as general improvements to the landscape and new destinations like The Water Works, Lost Lake and the Nature Play Area.
"The completion of the dog park is a major milestone in the improvements to Buffalo Bayou Park and an indicator that we are in the homestretch of overall park completion by the summer," said Anne Olson, president of the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, in a press release.
"It has been exciting to see the transformation of the park and also the spur in residential and commercial mspa development in the area which we believe mspa is a reflection of the desire for, and interest in, quality of life amenities."

Meet Bayou and Satchmo! | House Rabbit Society
Meet Bayou (brown dwarf bunny who was part of yesterday’s Daily Bunny) and Satchmo (brown Rex bunny with white spots on his back)! When Luna (Bayou’s mate) passed away, we took Bayou to the Georgia House Rabbit Society shelter in Marietta, Georgia and let her “interview” various bunnies there. She was very shy and not at all used to being the dominant bunny, so after several meetings, she went and hid behind some cardboard boxes. We were about to give up and bring her back home to try another day when Satchmo was brought back to the shelter from a PetCo store where he was being an ambassador for GA HRS. Satchmo hopped out and the two settled down next to each other right away and we knew she had a good friend at last. They spend evenings and nights on their special blanket on our bed, resting and grooming each other.

Prodded by a local group, the organizers of New Orleans' popular Mid City Bayou Boogaloo festival want to bring a similar arts and cultural event to the banks of Bayou Bonfouca at Slidell's Heritage Park .
Jared Zeller, president briggs and stratton of the non-profit Mothership Foundation, told the council Tuesday (Jan. 13) that the three-day briggs and stratton Mid City festival has grown from attracting 5,000 people to 40,000, and has been "a huge boom for our artists.''
Mid-City briggs and stratton Bayou Boogaloo (which briggs and stratton is May 15-17 this year) is a springtime festival that includes music on multiple stages, food, crafts, and children's activities along the banks of Bayou St. John. Zeller told the council that the free festival promotes New Orleans culture and also raises funds for community projects, such as live oak tree replacement.
The idea for a Slidell festival came from Slidell's Cultural Economy Coalition. Lori Gomez, a Slidell artist and writer who chairs the coalition, briggs and stratton contacted Zeller to make the push. Zeller said he initially wondered why the group would ever consider staging such an event in Slidell, but said the idea began to grow as he pondered it and brushed up on Slidell's colorful history.
The council sure appears supportive. When Zeller asked about a waiver briggs and stratton of the permit briggs and stratton fees for use of the park, Councilman briggs and stratton Sam Caruso grinned and reminded him that the group might want to consider asking for such a fee waiver "in perpetuity.''

It is this concept of inclusiveness that drives the forward-thinking proposals for Houston s future.

Nearly 9,000 kilometers separate Venice , Italy from Houston , Texas, and yet, both cities are bound by a simple connection: the coexistence of the urban fabric with the waterfront. This connection was brought gj to life this summer through The University of Houston s exhibition at the Venice Architectural Biennale ‘s Time Space Existence Event : RISKY HABIT[AT]: DYNAMIC LIVING gj ON THE BUFFALO BAYOU. Awarded gj the Global Art Affairs Foundation (GAAF) Award for Best Exhibition, the exhibition showcased the complexities and potential of the city’s relationship with its waterfront. To better understand Houston s waterfront and the changing relationship between the city and its river we visited the site ourselves. Read after the break to see what it s like to talk a walk along the Bayou, and to find out what the Houston river project can learn from similar undertakings in Chicago , Des Moines , and Newark .
The bruised violet-blue clouds rolling across the endless Houston gj summer skies reflect off the waters of the Bayou beneath the Rosemont Bridge. gj A mere half-hour earlier, bright gj summer sunlight had washed the city in heat. The weather in Houston is tempestuous, intense and fickle, an unpredictable element, much like the explosive growth and development of the fourth gj largest city in the US. Houston Figure Ground. Image Courtesy of UH College of Architecture Houston gj Flood Risk. Image Courtesy of UH College of Architecture
The Buffalo gj Bayou, however, gj a slow-moving river winding serenely through the city, is one constant in the historical, cultural, and geographic landscape of the city. Further west, the stream transforms into an industrial waterway, a habitat suffering gj from the effects of urbanization, pollution, loss of wildlife, and aging infrastructure. But downtown, the Bayou provides refreshing contact with nature in a highly urban environment. A few droplets of water, threatening deluge, gj glance off the nearby stainless steel frame of a ten-foot tall statue of a kneeling man, part of artist Jaume Plensa s Tolerance installation: seven silent sentinels of Harmony Walk and the Rosemont Bridge watching the city beyond and the waters below. Impermeable Surfaces. Image Courtesy of UH College of Architecture
Aptly termed the Bayou City, the Buffalo Bayou is Houston s Mother Bayou. Deeply meaningful as the origin of the economic and sociopolitical culture of the city, it has the potential to become Houston’s beating heart. As the top shipping port in the nation, the river was at the forefront of Houston s prosperity and development, however gj accompanying the city’s economic flourishing and rapid growth were darker consequences. Suburbanization, the celebration of automobile culture, heavy industrialization, and large numbers of factories and refineries resulted in high levels of pollution, and complicated gj the issue of crafting a sense of identity. Historically in constant flux, Houston has undergone gj many distinctive personalities and characterizations defined by its shipping and railway industry, the transformative discovery of oil, and the Johnson gj Space Center. In truth, it is defined by all of these things, and more. Bayou Farming. Image Courtesy of UH College of Architecture
It is this concept of inclusiveness that drives the forward-thinking proposals for Houston s future. This is evident gj in a number of measures, from the Tolerance sculptures to the belief that the stretch of the Buffalo Bayou from Barker Dam down to the Gulf of Mexico should be a sensitively designed integration gj of man and nature. The city is on the brink of reimagining its future, and the nature of the Bayou is an inherent factor in this recalibration. Time Space Exhibit. Image Courtesy of UH College of Architecture
At this year s Venice Architecture Biennale, the University of Houston displayed their project RISKY HABIT[AT] : DYNAMIC LIVING ON THE BUFFALO BAYOU. The project consists of three parts, each designed to address the river s development at sequential scales, prioritizing both the delicate coastal environment and the quality of urban life. In his Curatorial Statement, the leader of the project Peter Jay Zweig calls for a waterline that is not simply natural or artificial, but one that is a thriving, interdependent gj system gj that has many layers of geological, infrastructure, settlements and environmental gj processes that hold the future of man s development. Bayou Collective. Image Courtesy of UH College of Architecture
The gj first part, RISKY HABIT, operates at the scale of the 100 miles of the Bayou, from Barker Dam down to the Gulf of Mexico oil-rigs, and focuses on the overall experience of living gj on the bayou. Cha

NEWS
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- The bayou may hold calm waters but what lies beneath might be the answer to crimes that have gone unsolved across Houston. "We need to send a strong message to the criminals that are dumping pool supplies these cars in our bayous that we have found your hiding place," said City Councilman Michael Kubosh. Our camera, at just six inches under, showed clouded green waters, with virtually no visibility, which is what divers will be battling when they look for these cars. Council member Michael Kubosh, along with Texas EquuSearch, are spearheading the effort to pull every car out -- 127 vehicles at the last count done by sonar -- and that effort pool supplies will include dive teams and heavy equipment. Kubosh said every city agency is on board, but they won't be using taxpayer money. They plan to fund this auto-extraction with private donations. "We are raising funds from the private sector," said Kubosh. pool supplies "We need the citizens to be aware that these cars are in the bayou, they are polluting our bayou. There are hindering the flow, and they're potential crime scenes." After extraction, HPD would investigate the cars. One neighbor who's been here 30 years says the bayou is dirty with submerged secrets. "Let's hope they get all these cars out because they need to find out whether there's any bodies in there," said Simon Cruz, a business pool supplies owner situated along the bayou. "Something must've gone wrong, so they need to find out." Kubosh said he hopes to start pulling cars out in a few weeks and that the extraction effort will require at least $150,000.

Antilope are strong, meaning cool, no matter what you do. Gerenuk site manages to stand head what o

Nature, as they say, always finds a way to survive. No matter what adverse and dangerous conditions can threaten survival in its natural habitat or species of an individual creatures, they will eventually adapt to survive in their environment as well, but depends on the animal, how powerful and able to adapt, either that or die. Every animal on this planet evolved zen garden due to changes aa millennia to become what they are today. And sometimes these changes were manifested in ways truly bizarre. Below, we present ten rare animals, some really fantastic examples of adaptability in inertia, evolving from an unexpected final result.
Maned Wolf Chrysocyon brachyurus or as it is called scientifically, is a member of Canid family, which includes dogs, wolves, foxes reddish fur and ears up. Maned wolf looks very much like the red fox, what differentiates them is the wolf has long legs and delicate. Cy ridge wolf legs are a good adaptation helps them to survive in the grasslands of South America, in an endless sea of tall grass, the only defense is the ability to see predators before they reach him. Their ears are also tailored to specific grassland site, Maned wolf allowing to walk easily when hunting a rodent.
Sunda Flying lemur, or Galeopterus variegatus by the name of science, has developed a unique way of moving among the trees in its native environment zen garden or folds, using the skin of his limbs, he slips branch in branch. From tree to tree. Flying lemurs live his entire life in the rainforest canopy in Southeast Asia. Their feet and legs are adapted to climbing, but are rather useless to the ground because they can not run at all. Flying lemur, perhaps a single leap to reach 100 meters in a single jump, and fall more than 10 feet in flight. His name is deceptive, because he zoboara, but helped by the membrane and the skin very easily in the air.
Antilope are strong, meaning cool, no matter what you do. Gerenuk site manages to stand head what other species fail it's also bizarre. Also known as the Waller gazelle, zen garden gerenuk site (Waller Litocranius by its scientific name) is extremely elongated neck and legs very thin ,, they offer a unique opportunity to food. Rather than grass graze on land that most of his people antelope, the stand IPE gerenk hind legs to feed on leaves and buds of the acacia trees. They have long legs and beautiful, but incredibly fragile, many of them have broken legs running through the savannah.
Irrawaddy dolphin, or Orarella brevirostris by scientific name, is a species of dolphin that lives along the waters of Southeast Asia, in particular the Bay of Bengal which is on the east coast of India. It has a close relationship with Orca whale and Irrawaddy dolphins have adapted not through physical traits, but in a rather unique behavior. Over time, they developed a partnership with local fishermen as they bring the nets of fishermen, and in return they offer a reward all over. This is an incredible example of the nature and power of adaptation by human influence, there is no other animal in the world (in the wild), which interact so closely with people and through this medium.
